Randana
Trio Joubran
(This review is from Amazon.com)
This engrossing recital showcases three Nazareth-born, oud-playing brothers of impeccable pedigree. The eldest, Samir, began his education under his father, a respected oud-maker. He graduated from a local music school before going on to study at the Muhammed Abdul Wahab Conservatory in Cairo, Egypt. The middle sibling, Wissam, is not only revered for fiery improvisations that are nonetheless firmly grounded in ancient modes but has followed in his father footsteps in a big way. He was the first-ever Arab lute builder to graduate from the Stradivarius Institute in Cremona, Italy. All three brothers perform on instruments hand-made by Wissam. The youngest, Adnan, only began playing professionally over the past couple of years and is already widely recognized as a prodigy. The trio made their Carnegie Hall debut in 2006, to rapturous acclaim, at composer John Adams’s "In Your Ear Too" Festival. Comparisons to the DiMeola-De Lucia-McLaughlin guitar summit are only partly accurate. Rather than bringing together disparate styles, the Joubrans are engaged in creating a deeper understanding of a single tradition via multiple viewpoints.

Karloma
Karloma
A new sound was born in Ramallah, Palestine in 1999. The name of the ensemble, which is also the name of this CD, comes from the lexicon of Arabic calligraphy, and describes the initial abstract sketches of the artist. The CD was produced by the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music (ESNCM) of Birzeit University, with support from the United Nations Development Program.
Karloma is a marvellous production of fusion oriental music including original works by oud player and composer Ahmad Al-Khateeb as well as oriental classics arranged specially for Karloma. The main musicians on Karloma are teachers at the ESNCM, and include Ahmad Al-Khateeb on oud, Heather Macdonald on flute, Rudi Felder on double bass and Nasser Salameh on percussion. The CD also features other guest artists.
The music is very oriental in essence but also transcends boundaries of culture and geography towards a more universal sound. Most of the pieces are instrumental although some include vocals, and the use of original, oriental rhythms in some of the pieces has added a unique taste to this production.
Tracks: 1. Sama'i Shat araban 2. Longa HijazKar 3. Zawalif 4. Silk Road 5. Sama'i Muhhayer Kurdi 6. Zeina 7. Once upon a time 8. Zar 9. Kelmet Atab 10. The Flying Bird
